Comm-Gen Chihuri

Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri said on Tuesday that he will resign if another political party gets into office and is not apologetic for supporting Zanu-PF as it is the governing party of the day. He made the remarks during a debriefing and briefing session of police officers returning from and going on a peacekeeping mission to Liberia.

Comm Gen Chihuri said he was receiving several calls from some people questioning his political standing.
“I have often received calls and messages from people who question why I speak like I am Zanu-PF,” he said.

“My answer is simple, I asked them if Zanu-PF was not in Zimbabwe? Ndakatovati ini munondibvisa kana mavakutonga and handimirire kubviswa, munotowana ndaenda.”

The MDC formations wanted Comm Gen Chihuri, and other Generals, removed from office during the tenure of the inclusive Government. Comm Gen Chihuri castigated the now defunct inclusive Government, saying it created a myriad of obstacles meant to bring about illegal regime change.

“You will remember that the period of the inclusive Government, which we need to be quick to forget, created a myriad of obstacles which were put in the way of effective policing by our detractors,” he said.

“The pillars of national institutions came under spirited attack.
“The social fabric was pierced and undone by those who had an appetite to collapse every system in a bid to effect illegal regime change.”
Comm Gen Chihuri said the police was an indivisible component of Zimbabwe.

“The pulse of the nation is our pulse,” he said.
“Our philosophy and work practice continue to be fashioned and deeply rooted in the national tempo.”
Comm Gen Chihuri said the ZRP was not apologetic for supporting the Government of the day.

“For the departing officers, your responsibility is clear, your task is to ensure that the high standard set by your predecessors is not only sustained, but scaled if possible,” he said.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police values the commitment by the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations to bring together countries in pursuit of peace and tranquillity in countries that have experienced civil wars and unrest.”

Comm Gen Chihuri said peacekeeping mandates the officers to perform their duties with insightful understanding and sensitivity.
“In this regard, it becomes imperative for officers undertaking these duties to appreciate and clearly understand that it is the individual performance that brings out a collective good,” he said.

“It is important to note that peace and harmony should be inculcated within the contingents as they work together. A competent team functions well where there is respect for authority and chain of command.”
