Blessings Chidakwa in Kadoma
Kadoma City Council’s plan to upgrade the Waverley Bus Stop to an intercity terminus has suffered a stillbirth with no progress recorded over the past six months.

The bus stop was supposed to provide a solution to the chaos that was being caused by vehicles and people along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.

Apart from an incomplete public toilet, there has been not much progress on the project. The City of Kadoma has on several occasions cited funding challenges amid concerns that the area posed a health time bomb ahead of the rainy season.

In an interview recently, former Kadoma mayor Councillor Muchineripi Chinyanganya said council had applied for borrowing powers to complete some of the projects, including the bus terminus.

“We resolved to seek borrowing powers for $5,5 million from Government and part of the money will be channelled towards upgrading the Waverley Bus Terminus,” he said.

“Council also received $4 000 from the Commonwealth Local Government Forum for the rehabilitation of the vegetable market at the site.”

Kadoma Residents Association chairperson Mr Wikirosi Mutizira expressed concern over the delays.

“Council should speed up the upgrading of that bus stop before a major disaster occurs at the area,” he said.

Residents initially resisted moves to upgrade the bus stop, expressing concern that it would lead to bus operators ditching the old Rimuka Bus Station.

A compromise was reached for all buses plying rural routes to use the Rimuka Bus Station while urban routes buses use the new terminus.
