Well-known undertaker Michael Galiao, who presided over the burial of many prominent people, national and provincial heroes, has died.

He was 52.

Galiao succumbed to pulmonary fibrosis, a respiratory disease in which scars are formed in the lung tissues, leading to serious breathing problems.

He was admitted at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for some time and was discharged when he showed signs of recovery.

However, his condition worsened again and he died on Sunday morning after being admitted to Arcadia Medical Centre in Harare.

Family spokesperson Bridget Galiao said Michael died around 7am and his death was a huge loss.

“Mike Galiao was a hero to the family and comforted mourners whenever he directed funerals. He was an expert in his job and trained a lot of people and his death is a huge loss,” Bridget said.

She said Michael’s body would be cremated and the ashes will be buried tomorrow at Warren Hills Cemetery.

The body will leave Moonlight Funeral parlour tomorrow for a church service at the Braeside Roman Catholic Church and body viewing will be done before it is taken for cremation.

However, in an interview with The Sunday Mail on June 8, 2014, Michael said he was against cremation and would like to receive a proper burial.

Family members who spoke to The Herald last night said Michael later reversed his decision and opted to be cremated.

“If you look out for that article, it was written long back. Michael always told us that he had buried a lot of people and he did not want to be buried in that manner and besides, anyone can change his decision,” said another relative, Rosy Galiao.

Michael buried many national and provincial heroes including the late First Lady Amai Sally Mugabe, Cdes Moven Mahachi, Maurice Nyagumbo, brothers Herbert and Christopher Ushewokunze, dendera maestro Simon Chimbetu, among others.

He also buried comedian and musician Safirio Madzikatire, popularly known as Mukadota.

Michael worked for Marshfords, Doves and Moonlight funeral parlours.

Mourners are gathered at number 44 Hoodstock, Arcadia in Harare.
