Environment, Water and Climate Minister Saviour Kasukuwere yesterday challenged community stakeholders to adopt effective management practices that reduce waste generation and adopt recycling initiatives.

Handing over 200 litter receptacles donated by the Environment Management Agency to the City of Harare through the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Cde Kasukuwere said the business community should shun the use of plastic carrier packaging to avoid mass littering of the environment.

“All pedestrians, motorists, the business community and all the society stakeholders should stop the habit to discard litter everywhere,” he said.

“Motorists should have trash bags in their vehicles for placing litter. Stakeholders across the spectrum of the society should, therefore, effectively adopt waste management practices to maintain a clean, safe, and healthy environment as a nation.”

Cde Kasukuwere said the city council should consider the collection of refuse to reduce the spread of diseases.

He said an integrated solid waste management plan was put in place as a guiding framework within which the country deals with waste management. “Everyone must throw litter in the bins distributed in town,” said Cde Kasukuwere.

Speaking at the same function, Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Dr Ignatius Chombo said Zimbabweans should inculcate in themselves a conscious decision to stop creating litter and rather create a clean environment.

“I call upon everyone to make a conscious decision today to stop littering the environment,” he said.

“Everyone has a right to monitor and encourage neighbours, friends and even strangers to use the bins and keep Zimbabwe clean.”
