An unlicensed driver who knocked down a two-and-half-year old child in Chitungwiza, who later died on admission at hospital, has been sentenced to eight months in prison. Emmanuel Maradzike (26) of 1032 St Mary’s in Chitungwiza was also barred from driving heavy vehicles for life. He pleaded guilty to one count of culpable homicide and driving without a licence.

Maradzike appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Ms Tafadzwa Miti who handed him 11 months on both counts.

Ms Miti set aside three months on condition of good behaviour.

Prosecutor, Mr Edmond Ndambakuwa proved that on August 8 this year at around 10am, Maradzike was driving a heavy vehicle, AVM DAF along an unnamed dusty road off Seke Road near Manyame Park Bridge.

The court heard that at a certain point on the same road, Maradzike hit the toddler who sustained serious injuries.

After the accident, Maradzike was asked to produce his driver’s licence, but failed to do so leading to his arrest.

The minor was rushed to Chitungwiza Central Hospital for treatment but died on admission due to severe injuries sustained from the accident.

Maridzike’s vehicle was taken to Vehicle Inspection Department in Chitungwiza for examination.
