Typhoid has hit Sunningdale in southern Harare, infecting nine people, and the source is suspected to be the perennial sewer problems in the suburb.

City Health director Dr Prosper Chonzi yesterday said investigations were underway.

Local councillor Hammy Madzingira said the nine people were tested at a private health facility.

“The nine are from Sunningdale 2 that is always battling sewer bursts. According to engineers the initial laying pipes was not done correctly resulting in recurrent sewer bursts,” he said.

Clr Madzingira said they were now working on containing the outbreak while resources to replace the sewer pipes were being  mobilised.

Combined Harare Residents Association director Mrs Loreen Mupasiri-Sani said they were worried about the city council’s laid back approach to issues affecting  residents.

“We are also concerned that the City of Harare seems not to have awakened to the dangers that poor water and sanitation facilities pose for residents.”

Mrs Mupasiri-Sani encouraged Sunningdale residents to go for testing while the council should take a response team to the area for further tests.
