Steelmakers Private Limited is constructing a water purification plant a development that is set to end perennial water woes in Redcliff Town.

Redcliff municipality is relying on water from Kwekwe City but relations between the two local authorities has been acrimonious due to the latter’s failure to service its water bill.

Steelmakers is getting about 1 000 litres of water from Kwekwe City on a daily basis.

Speaking during a familiarisation tour of the company by the Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs Larry Mavima yesterday, Steelmakers operations director Mr Alamwar Upendra told the delegates that the construction of the plant was at an advanced stage.

He said the new plant, which is located at the company’s premises, will also service Redcliff municipality where the majority of the company employees live.

“In our quest to do everything for ourselves and minimise costs, we have also embarked on the construction of a water purification plant which is about 75 percent complete. The water plant will serve both our plants as well as the community at large,” said Mr Upendra.

He said the plant has a capacity of producing 1000 liters of water daily with 70 percent going to the plant while the remaining will be consumed by the community.

He said they will draw water from a 20 meter dip borehole that the company drilled before the water goes through the purification process and is then pumped to the company and the community at large.

Minister Mavima hailed the developement saying it would go a long way in alleviating water challenges that are bedeviling the community.

“I am glad that the company is playing its expected role in the community. Besides it being the largest employer in Redcliff, the company has also gone a step further in alleviating water problems which have been affecting Redcliff,” he said.

Since the closure of Ziscosteel, which used to treat water on behalf of the local authority, Redcliff has been facing water shortages and have been relying on Kwekwe and other sources like boreholes.
