A Chitungwiza municipal policeman has landed himself in trouble for allegedly lying to police that the town’s mayor assaulted him.
Matthew Mateo Kamurayi (29) of St Mary’s had reported to the police that the town’s mayor, Councillor Phillip Mutoti (MDC-T), had assaulted him. Kamurayi has since appeared in court charged with deliberately supplying false information to the public authority.

He denied the charges before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Kudakwashe Jarabini and was remanded out of custody on US$50 bail to October 21 for trial.

Kamurayi is being represented by Mr Stephen Gahadzikwa of Gahadzikwa and Mupunga Legal Practitioners. Prosecutor Mr Edmond Ndambakuwa alleges that on Tuesday this week and at around 11am, Kamurayi was involved in an altercation with two MDC-T youths.

The two were identified as Vitalis and Soldier and the incident took place at Macheka Square in St Mary’s. On reporting his case at St Mary’s police to Constable Tawanda Godfrey on the same day, Kamurayi gave his name as Matthew Mhizha.

He stated his address as 861 instead of 845 Shandiwo Crescent in the same location. It is further alleged that the statement he signed on record 130/10/13 is a false report. Mr Ndambakuwa told the court that Kamurayi lied to have been assaulted by Clr Mutoti.

Investigations carried established that Clr Mutoti was not present when Kamurayi was assaulted. The matter was reported to the police, leading to his arrest.
