Governments have been urged to formulate labour policies that assist migrant workers realise their full potential while promoting economic growth.
Addressing participants at a course on fostering the social and professional reintegration of return labour migrants here on Tuesday, labour expert Mr Jean Pierre Cassarino said weak social dialogue, ineffective poverty reduction measures, corruption and social inequalities in many countries were the main factors affecting labour migrants.

“Governments, employer associations, trade unions need to consult each other when formulating measures aimed at supporting the social and professional reintegration of return labour migrants,” he said.

Labour migration, he said, was directly linked to development, poverty reduction, labour market policies and job creation in both receiving and sending countries. He added that labour migrants failed to return home because they were uncertain about how the would be received by relatives, friends or even by the social structures.

The one-week course was organised by the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organisation.
