“Without career guidance students will have a narrow focus and it can lead to career decisions making associated with anxiety, lower life satisfaction, depression and lower achievement.”

Privilege Tafadzwa Makaza  is a young man who grew up in Kuwadzana Extension, and did his O and A Level at Chipindura  High School located in Mashonald Central.

The young man had always had a  bigger vision of making dreams come true by making career guidance systematic in high schools in Zimbabwe.

This was especially important  considering the need for it in helping students with their career and tertiary programme selection.

For the students it is  a process of helping individuals in making educational and occupational choices and in taking career decisions based on the requirements and demand of the future work in general.

Privilege is a holder of Bachelor of Science Honours Degree Occupational Therapy which he attained from the University of Zimbabwe.

“I noticed how most students from high schools get lost along the way as a result of not having career guidance and that alone made me come up with an organisation that helps them in making such big life decisions.

“Royal Society Foundation is the name of the organisation and it focuses mostly on providing of career guidance to the students across the whole nation of Zimbabwe,” said Privilege.

The organisation has been greatly appreciated by many stakeholders in the education sector who have witnessed it’s positive impact to students in the nation.

Two students, one from Masvingo and the other from Harare who preferred not to be named for personal reasons,  shared their story outlining how Royal Society’s career guidance sessions had helped them to select programmes that they wanted to pursue at tertiary level with all the pressure from parents, friends and peers who had their own programmes that they wanted them to study.

“Career guidance has a number of advantages likely to promote positive well-being, including self recognition of strengths, a focus on the future, setting achievable goals and building of a social identity through work,” said Makaza.

The introduction of this organisation has managed to change a lot of high school student’s mindset  as far as career and good programme selection at tertiary level are concerned.

“High school students need  career guidance more than anyone so as to that they can plan for future career endeavours based on their individual interests, skills and values.

Participation in career guidance enhances linking of academic and career experiences and it improves career preparation and management which is important” added Privilege.

Zimbabwe’s primary and secondary educational system needs a structured career guidance programme which has to he incorporated into it’s carriculum.

This obviously will help the nation to minimise the frustration of high employment rate among the youths.
