Preparations for this year’s  Zanu-PF annual people’s conference scheduled for Chinhoyi in December are in progress with the selection of a site just behind Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital for the construction of the venue. Chinhoyi University of Technology grounds have been selected as the alternative venue for the revolutionary party’s gathering should construction fall behind schedule.

In an interview, party national chairman Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo said the national conference committee will meet on Wednesday to evaluate the current position and map the way forward.

“I cannot give a position on progress until the meeting of the national people’s conference committee on Wednesday,” he said.
Mashonaland West provincial chairman and deputy provincial chairperson of the construction committee said a meeting to evaluate the feasibility of finalising the construction of the venue in time scheduled for last weekend has been moved to this weekend.

“We sat as the provincial executive this week and deliberated on the issue and we wanted to get direction on the way forward from the Provincial Co-ordinating Committe, but unfortunately it has been rescheduled,” he said.

The meeting is expected to come up with a position on the choice of venue after considering the current position regarding fund-raising and the input of the technical committee on the time frames.

According to inside sources, there are proposals to lay concrete footing and pitch tents on the site as chances of constructing the envisaged US$10 million mega-conference structure ahead of the conference looked slim. Contacted for comment, the chairperson of the provincial committee referred all questions to Cde Mafa and secretary for administration Cde Didymus Mutasa or national chairman Ambassdador Khaya Moyo.

The conference comes to Mashonaland West after Midlands hosted last year’s conference at the newly constructed conference centre following round the clock work to meet the conference dates.
