Matabeleland South National Association of Secondary Heads Under-20 handball representatives Phakamani and Filabusi High schools are aiming for gold at this year’s national finals in Kwekwe. Phakamani will represent the province in the boys competition while Filabusi will take part in the girls’ event. Cool Lifestyle learnt that since the re-introduction of handball in the schools calendar in 2008, Matopo High, Gwanda, Mzinyathini, Plumtree and JZ Moyo High schools, all from Matabeleland South province, have done well in the national finals.

Filabusi High School girls’ side have defied odds to qualify for the national finals with barely enough resources to train showing that hard work and commitment pays.

Phakamani concluded their preparations ahead of the tournament and coach Nation Ncube was confident they would lift the title.

The coach said their play has improved and was above expectation since the first stage of the competition with the boys confident of victory.

In 2014, Daramombe and Churchill Boys High schools were crowned the champions at Northlea High School in Bulawayo.

In the matches played Daramombe overcame Harare’s Girls High while Churchill defeated Rujeko High. Both teams won with a smaller margin.

JZ Moyo who were the champions in the boys category in 2013 were whipped by Churchill in the semis before losing to Matopo in the third place play off, while Filabusi High School finished third in the girls category.

The head-in-charge of Nash handball said they were looking forward to an exciting competition as each year they get different teams and this shows a sign of standard from every province.

This year’s national finals would also be used to select the Zimbabwe team that will participate in the Young Masters Cup invitation in Cape Town, South Africa next month.
