This follows a spate of violence and petrol bombings that recently rocked the capital. Several youths from the MDC-T have been rounded up by the police in connection with violence and have since appeared in court.
The committees set up yesterday comprise officials from the three political parties – Zanu-PF, MDC-T and MDC’s youth, women and main wings.
The names of committee members were submitted to Jomic at a meeting held in Harare yesterday.
Cde Oppah Muchinguri (Zanu-PF), Mr Elias Mudzuri (MDC-T) and Mr Frank Chamunorwa (MDC) attended the meeting.
Cde Muchinguri stressed the need to eliminate politically motivated violence especially now when the country is headed for elections.
“We are going for elections and the issue of violence should be addressed. Dialogue should start at the grass root level,” she said.
Cde Muchinguri urged the media to play a pivotal role in discouraging violence and challenged political parties to desist from using provocative slogans.
Zanu-PF Harare provincial chairperson Cde Amos Midzi who also attended the meeting said the development was a step in the right direction.
“It is the proper thing to do as it is within the framework of the Jomic and the Global Political Agreement.
“The people of Zimbabwe expect that we act decisively and eliminate violence while also looking at the causes where we can and address them,” he said.
The MDC-T provincial chairman, Mr Morgan Femai, echoed the same sentiments.
“With this process we seem to be in the right direction. We are calling for Harare residents to stop violence with immediate effect. People should desist from violence so that we go for peaceful elections.
“We are committed, my-self, Mr Midzi and Mr Chamunorwa are so committed to this,” he said.
Mr Chamunorwa said it was important to embrace the youth, women and main wings from the three political parties to help address the issue of violence.
“Provincial chairpersons are not always on the ground. We should cascade to the cells preaching the gospel of peace and tolerance,” he said.
Police this week said investigations have revealed that MDC-T activists staying in the so-called safe houses were behind the series of terror acts that have been witnessed in the capital.
Last week Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri warned unruly elements perpetrating political violence saying the force was ready to maintain law and order.
