Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women).
The post fell vacant after the resignation in March of the first head, Michelle Bachelet, who return home to contest for Chile’s presidency.

UN Women was formed in July 2010 by the United Nations General Assembly as part of accelerating the international body’s efforts in achieving goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

Ms Gumbonzvada, who is the current secretary general of the World Young Women’s Christian Association, has more than 20 years experience on issues of women and children’s human rights, with a special focus on crisis countries.

For more than 10 years she was the regional director for the United Nations Development Fund for Women covering 13 countries. She also worked as a human rights officer with Unicef in Liberia and Zimbabwe and founded Rozaria Memorial Trust which recognises women of unique achievements.
