GOVERNMENT has opened negotiations with a major contractor for the construction of Kunzvi and Musami dams to ease water shortages in Harare’s northern suburbs.

This was revealed by Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Saviour Kasukuwere recently while addressing City Fathers.

“I am pleased to say that from my previous Ministry of Environment, Water and Climate, we had made considerable progress on the issue of Kunzvi and Musami dams.

“We need both dams as Kunzvi alone will not be able to supply sufficient water to Harare.

“I know that there is now an agreement that is being worked on with a major contractor who is going to be coming in to build the dams,” he said.

Minister Kasukuwere did not reveal the contractor’s name.

He said the project would cost $1 billion including associated works like piping the water to Harare.

He also said construction was expected to begin soon.

“So, lots of discussions will be held between our Town House as well as the Ministry of Environment, Water and Climate, but we stand ready to facilitate that this project goes ahead,” he said.

Northern suburbs like Glen Lorne, Glenwood and Shawasha Hills experience erratic water supplies.
