Forgotten sungura group Eden Boys has bounced back with a six track album titled “Monica the Chocolate” that was released last week. The group led by George Chakwata hogged the limelight in 2000 with their song “Makanganwa Magarika” off album “Makanganwa.”
Chakwata said they had made efforts to keep the group’s fame since the hit song but the efforts were fruitless.

“I signed a contract with the late music promoter Jimmy Jimalo but things did not go well after we had a misunderstanding over instruments that were said to have been stolen,” said Chakwata.

In 2006 he got a contract with Gramma Records and recorded an album titled “Tsvimbo Yechikara”, but failed to get recognition on the local market. “After that album flopped I had no money to continue with music and I just went on to do some other jobs,” he said.

The group had no instruments and other band members decided to move on finding other avenues. Chakwata then joined dendera musician Tryson Chimbetu as an engineer in trying to revive his career.

“When I was working with Chimbetu, I was not active on stage so I decided to be an engineer before getting another contract with Diamond Studios,” he said. He is optimistic that the album would help him reclaim his fame.

“Currently I don’t have instruments and the resources to hire so I cannot hold live performances,” he said.

Asked if his record company could not lend him instruments Chakwata said he was still negotiating.
