Con-woman dupes desperate cash seekers

A con-woman from Chitungwiza duped 11 people of over $800 through EcoCash after indicating to her victims that she could help them get hard cash from her husband’s workplace.

Pretty Fumira (27) of Savanhu Village in Seke, pleaded guilty to 11 counts of fraud when she appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Ms Blessing Murwisi. Ms Murwisi remanded her in custody to today for sentencing. Public prosecutor Mr Edmond Ndambakuwa proved that on November 8 at Makoni flea market in Chitungwiza, Fumira met the first complainant, Gabriel Meki (30), of Unit B at the same location.

The court heard that Fumira indicated to him that she was in a position to help him get hard cash from her husband’s workplace. Meki fell for the trap and deposited $405 into Fumira’s EcoCash number (0774 279 914) and she told him to expect the money within four days. On November 9, she informed Meki to deposit another $102 into her wallet, indicating that she was going to hand him the money the following day.

After some time, Meki became suspicious after Fumira failed to honour her word. She also used the same modus operandi to dupe Blessing Mashero (30) of Unit O in Chitungwiza of $44. She also misrepresented to Eska Nhika (46), who deposited $56 into her wallet and eight other people, all from Chitungwiza.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to her arrest and subsequent appearance in court
