CAPS United believe in-form striker Dominic Chungwa has responded well with the responsibility of his new role as the new leader of the Green Machine attack. The big forward has always divided opinion at the club with some fans and critics saying he misses more than he scores and is a liability. The champions had to turn Abbas Amidu from someone who had generally been playing wide to a centre striker when Leonard Tsipa suffered a career-ending injury. Amidu thrived in that role and is now set to join a foreign club after impressing in the CAF Champions League.

Coach Lloyd Chitembwe was forced to turn to Chungwa to lead his attack and the forward has responded well, playing alongside impressive newboy John Zhuwawo, with some big goals. Chungwa has scored three goals in his last two matches against tough opposition, including a double against Ngezi Platinum at Rufaro on Sunday.

“We have lost Abbas, he has been scoring for us, we have also lost Rooney (Ronald Chitiyo) he was scoring for us so if you look at the dynamics of it we have lost three goalscorers (including Leonard Tsipa) in one moment,’’ said assistant coach Fungai Toastao Kwashi.

“Between the three of them they gave us, at least, 20, 30-plus goals combined.

“Dominic Chungwa is playing good football, he is in good form and he has taken the baton stick and is shining.

“We also signed Chidibiere (Abasirim) but we are not putting him under pressure. He needs to adjust to Zimbabwe life and Zimbabwean football.

“All we are saying is enjoy and work hard and God will open doors for you.

“He should take inspiration form the Cameroonian player (Dynamos forward Christian Epoupa Ntouba).’’

After picking six points last week, Kwashi told his players to forget about victories and focus on the game against Rhinos tomorrow at the National Sports Stadium.

“It is about step by step going up the ladder. We are already thinking about Rhinos on Wednesday,” said Kwashi.

He believes their hectic fixture programme is working in their favour and their players have regained form. Since they bowed out of the Champions League, the champions have been fulfilling their outstanding fixtures even when other teams have gone on a break.

“In modern football, if you look at European teams, they play two games per week, so for us it is actually a good thing, too, that we are playing two games per week and we love the challenge,’’ said Kwashi.

“We are not looking at it as five games in hand, we are looking at it as 19 games left because the five games in hand are still fixtures.

“We have knocks because games are coming thick and fast but we expect it, it’s part and parcel of the business.

“But it is also time for others to shine, look at what Kudzi Nyamupfukudza did for us, he came in did a great job with Devon in central midfield.

“It has been about two months since he had game time through injury but came in and did a good job so we expect everyone who is given a chance to rise and shine.’’
