Gospel musician and Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe ambassador Charles Charamba has urged all drivers in Zimbabwe to adhere to traffic rules and regulations to improve the general driving standards in the country and beyond. Speaking at Mashonaland Region Driver of the Year competition Charamba said every citizen is mandated to continuously improve and promote road safety through various initiatives.

“I urge the winners to take pride in winning and the losers to know pretty well that they will also win in the next competitions.

To those drivers who are going to receive prizes tonight, you are urged to start preparing for the national finals which are always tougher and more rigorous than this competition,” he said.

He appealed for many sponsors to come on board as a way of encouraging drivers to be cautious while driving.

“May I also take this opportunity to appeal to the corporate world to partner us, and co-sponsor this Driver of the Year Competition,” he said.

He said it was good that the competition was growing with the number of contestants increasing by each year.

“The Mashonaland Region Driver of the Year Competition has continued to grow steadily since its resumption in 2011 with 11 organisations fielding 43 contestants, in 2012 there were 12 organisations who fielded 48 contestants, in 2014 there were16 organizations who fielded 53 contestants, and in 2015 there were17 organisations who fielded 83 contestants. Today, we have witnessed 25 participating organisations that fielded 121 contestants, distributed in different categories, among them articulate, commuter omnibus and bus category.

The “Machira Chete” hitmaker urged the contestants to be good ambassadors.

“It is not about winning but the contestants should be good ambassadors and exemplary drivers on our roads of which l was equally appointed to champion,” he said.
