Thirty students who have been selected to study in China under the Presidential Scholarship Programme, left the country for Qindao Province yesterday. They were sent off by the Executive Director of the Presidential Scholarship Programme, Dr Christopher Mushohwe. Twenty more students are expected to leave for China today.Addressing the students, their parents and guardians just before they left for the Harare International Airport, Dr Mushohwe, who is also the Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, implored the students to be good ambassadors and fly the country’s flag high.

The ecstatic parents commended the wise leadership of President Mugabe, which has seen more than 20 000 students benefitting from the programme so far, with some now working in different professions locally and overseas.

The students vowed to heed the words of wisdom imparted to them on Friday by President Mugabe when he hosted a reception for them and the invaluable advise they have been given by Dr Mushohwe.

The Presidential Scholarship Programme, which until now was restricted to Fort Hare and 15 other South African universities, has now spread to China after a Chinese company, Qingdao Hengshen offered 50 scholarships to Zimbabwean students.

The students have been enrolled in the areas of international trade, business management and Chinese language.

The enrolment is expected to rise to 100 students next year. The Presidential Scholarship Programme began in 1995 and aims to empower students from marginalised communities in Zimbabwe. — ZBC News online.
