HARARE City Council is failing to collect garbage because 19 of its refuse trucks are grounded as they do not have tyres. There are heaps of uncollected garbage in some residential areas.

The Environmental Management Committee has since urged council to ensure that the trucks are back on the road.

“Under matters for which the chairperson’s consent had been obtained, the committee expressed concern over non-collection of refuse due to 19 refuse trucks which were down due to lack of tyres.

“The committee wanted the town clerk to speed up the procurement of tyres,” reads minutes of a recent Environmental Management Committee meeting.

The committee heard that there were plans to procure tyres in stages.

“The director of works reported that the Finance and Development Committee has resolved that in the interim, council procures the tyres using its threshold of $10 000.

“This would enable council to procure tyres for at least one truck every week,” read the minutes.

The accumulation of garbage has become a cause of concern for residents as they fear the outbreak of diseases like cholera with the onset of the rainy season. Residents in most high-density suburbs are now dumping garbage in undesignated areas.
