Zimbabwe recently joined the rest of the world in commemorating the Global Hand washing Day on October 15.
Students from different schools in Harare and Chitungwiza gathered at the Town House where they washed their hands and were given information on good hygiene practices.
The day was celebrated under the global theme “The power is in your hands”.
“Prevention is better than cure. Let us take it upon ourselves to create a better future for our country.

“It will not hurt you to just ask your brother or sister if they washed their hands after using the toilet,” Harare Junior Mayor His Worship Confidence Thomas said.

Global Hand Washing Day is a campaign to motivate and mobilise millions around the world to wash their hands. It takes place on October 15 of each year. The campaign is dedicated to raising awareness of hand washing with soap as a key approach to disease prevention.

“The way you guys have attended these celebrations tells us a lot about the way a message can be accepted. Let us be ambassadors then and encourage each other to wash hands,” Alderman Lungani Zwangobani said.

Unilever through their Lifebuoy brand gave away T-shirts, soap, rulers, notebooks and demonstrated the correct way of washing hands as well as giving the students information on good hygiene practices.

“Lifebuoy is on a mission, a lifesaving mission to spread the importance of good hand washing habits around the world.
“Most importantly, a mission that will help more children reach their fifth birthday,” Sharon Wushe, a representative from Unilever, said.
