Television is an inescapable part of modern culture. We somehow depend on TV for entertainment, news, education, culture, weather, sports — and even music, since the advent of music videos. With more and more ways of viewing TV available we now have access to a plethora of both good quality and inappropriate TV content.

We hope you had a good weekend and with the chilly weather approaching, let it not be the season of black hole.

Why do people watch television?

Some researches reveal that people watch television: to unwind, for comfort, to connect, for an experience, to escape, or to indulge.

While there is much to be said for trying to understand why people watch television, rather than simply measuring how much they watch, reducing it to these six reasons seems rather simplistic.

It is interesting that the psychology of why people watch television, which is largely about their social and emotional needs, is far from aligned from the public service mission of broadcasters to inform, educate and entertain.

This then poses a question to “Vapositori”, I am not trying to cause a fight between the sector but for how long will they remain like that.

Food for thought, but we all want TV anyway.

Back to topical issues, nothing interesting on our local TV but, recently ZBC TV screened the police pass out parade which happened during working hours.

Interestingly, it was superb and I must say, some of my workmates were glued to the TV, forgetting the stressful day.

On that I salute you because it was flawless, but just wonder if you could have done a repeat during the weekend so that those who missed it would catch the glimpse.

Besides, I must confess, it was first time watching it on television.

On to DStv, Big Brother Mzansi ended on a high note, though some were not following it including yours truly because I had no connection.

We now wait for the Africa’s reality show and this time ‘Biggie’ is keeping fans guessing on when is the reality show will be on.

However Sunday night saw sensational Soweto sweethearts Ace and Ntombi, voted the winners of Big Brother Mzansi: Double Trouble, in a live 90 minute Finale screened exclusively on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161).

In what can only be described as a dream come true for the much-loved duo, they walked away with the life-changing R2 million prize after spending 56 days in the Big Brother house where they laughed, danced and sang their way into minds and memories of viewing audiences, winning hearts as much for their close-knit relationship as for their good humour and optimistic approach to life.

And they left the show in the same way they entered – thrilled to be on stage and as in love with each other as ever! It was always going to be a hugely emotional and highly dramatic Finale, and it certainly was just that, starting with the winner results being placed in a secure Perspex box on stage where it would be kept until it was time for the big announcement.

Three pairs remained in the game at the start of the show, and for Blue and K2 as well as Chelsea and Mbali the night was bittersweet as they came so close to scooping the title.

But while that wasn’t meant to be, both pairs can be confident in the knowledge that they too are stars in their own right having succeeded in making it all the way to the big Finale.

I also liked not loved how the show ended, thus paying tribute to their fellow housemates who began the journey with them and who departed the show at different times along the way.

One of the highlights of the Finale was an insert featuring Soxx and Tembi, who evicted last week, just one week shy of the Finale.

Looking happy and relaxed the pair was philosophical about their exit, chatting easily about their experiences on the game, their highs and lows plus their predictions about who would win the big prize.

We do hope South Africans were not doing sort of like auditions to their countrymen, so as to prepare them for the real BBA.

In some it is superfine.
