Although he normally performs at corporate functions, Afro-Jazz supremo Victor Kunonga has this time around taken his act to the people who inspire his lyrics most — the ghetto. Tomorrow he performs at the Keg Lounge at Makoni Shopping Centre in Chitungwiza for his first show at the joint

Ironically, his act comes hot on the heels of a gig by the superstar Oliver Mtukudzi, which he held jointly with Suluman Chimbetu at another leading joint in the vicinity in a show which many said excited ghetto music lovers.

If anything, this marks a shift in the usual trend since the artistes used to perform in upmarket joints like Jazz 105, Book Cafe and Mytsy’s before the venues closed.

By taking his music to the ghetto Kunonga and his band are showing that they do not demarcate their followers along geographical lines but can go where business calls.

“We are happy to be hosting Victor Kunonga whom you all know is one of those talented musicians who have put Zimbabwe not only on African but also world map through his infectious music.

“Having such a world class musician in the high-density suburb is such an honour and we hope this will inspire other artistes in the town,” said Tawanda Dzingayi of the Keg Lounge.

Kunonga has travelled a long and successful music journey that has seen him releasing four albums: “Such Is Life — Ndanyengetedzwa” (2004), “Uyo” (2006), “Peace” and “Kwedu” (2014).

Songs like “Maidarirei?”, “Tigere”, “Peace”, Usacheme”, “Hatimbonete”, Kubuda Hura” and “Kwedu are without doubt going to excite music lovers.
