Trial date set for MDC-A activists Fadzai Mahere

THE trial date for MDC-Alliance spokesperson Fadzai Mahere and other political activists accused of illegally staging a demonstration in Harare sometime last year  in breach of public health lockdown rules has been set for next month.

Harare regional magistrate Mr Stanford Mambanje set July 22 as the trial date for Mahere, playwright and filmmaker Tsitsi Dangarembga, Paul Besa, Julie Gabriel Barnes, Chamunorwa Phillip Ndengu, Tinotenda Muskwe, Tinashe Murapata, Jessica Drury, Nyasha Musandu, Josee Lotter and Simon Drury.

They are charged for participating in public gatherings with intent to cause public violence and of breaching the lockdown rules that prohibited public gatherings at that time.

Mahere and her accomplices were arrested at Groombridge Shopping Centre in Mount Pleasant, Harare after they staged the July 31 demonstration.

They were allegedly found wielding placards aimed at inciting an illegal demonstration.

Mrs Netsai Mushayabasa appeared for the State.
