Men at work at the new Theatre in the Park venue

Rooftop Promotions who are behind the construction of the new Theatre in the Park venue are happy with the progress made so far. Robert Tapfumaneyi who is the organisation’s information officer said paving bricks have been put in place and they have also set the concrete foundation. “Paving bricks have been set and now we have 15 days break before we can proceed,” he said. They have already purchased the containers that will be used for walls from South Africa. He said they will be installed when they resume work and they have set October 1 as the day for the official opening. “There is a lot of progress and as I speak we have a team that is organising events for the official opening,” he said.

According to the plan the venue will accommodate about four hundred people and there will be a TV and radio studio. There is also a room for the artistes to practise their plays. Tapfumaneyi said they were looking for interior designers who can do their best in the final touch-ups before the launch.

“We are trying our best to have natural designs of trees and grass inside so we are still looking for designers to work with,” he said.Daves Guzha, director of the organisation, thanked Harare City Council for their effort towards the development of theatre and arts industry in general. “The arts is key to economic development, take for example in Nigeria where Nollywood has contributed immensely to the economy. Their effort is worth to be celebrated,” said Guzha. For him it is one of the major developments that has been done in Rooftop Promotions’ projects for the past 17 years. “We were granted permission to use the old theatre venue about 17 years ago so this is one of the biggest developments for the company.”
