Drawing inspiration from artistes like the late Sam Mtukudzi, The Bundu Boys, Mokoomba, Lira, Zahara and American superstar Beyonce Knowles, Afro-pop singer Thamsanqa Moyo (17) seems destined for great heights.

The rising musician, who is popularly known as Tammy, experiments with fusions of various beats to come up with a sound that is likely to attract the attention of many music lovers.

Although she has only availed two singles on the market so far, Tammy’s flair on these songs and other unreleased material show a serious intention to create a unique signature on the tablet of Afro-pop music.

She is gradually dropping the singles that make up her upcoming album to introduce herself and her sound fusion to the market.

She first released the single “Sango”, which has topped music charts and she recently unveiled the second track titled “Tonight”.

The young lady says that she writes songs mostly about what she experiences in life and also her expectations are a drive to some of her songs.

“Tonight”, which is a groovy party song is meant to shift one’s mood automatically so that they engage in to a party mood.

“I am naturally a happy person and would want to see people happy so I did the song just to lighten up peoples` moods,” Tammy said.

Tammy who despite her age has had opportunities to perform locally at a film festival, National Arts Merit Awards ceremony and Harare International Festival of the Arts has gained much stage experience ahead of studio work.

She has been performing at HIFA since 2005 and this year she performed alongside Mokoomba on the main stage of the festival.

Internationally she performed at the Madison Square Garden in New York city representing Zimbabwe with the African Children`s Choir.

“I appreciate different sounds so I listen to different artistes across genres and this has led me to appreciate my own sound, which is unique in its own way,” Tammy said.

“I have a clear picture of where I want to be and that pushes me every day to work even harder to achieve my goals.”

The music industry, which is male dominated in Zimbabwe has seen a lot of women struggling to make it big and also to surpass the level at which their male counterparts set.

For some female artiste to make it there is need for that extra mile of hard work.

“Patience counts, one needs to be constantly driven and be daring in pursuing their own art,” she said.

“It is tough to compete with big names in the industry especially if you are a young lady you must be very talented and be focused because a lot is encompassed as an artiste.

“All I do is to forget about who is who and focus on my own brand.”

Tammy hopes to take her music step by step in terms of influence saying that she wants first to make a mark on the local industry before focusing on the international market.

The young enthusiastic music diva started singing at the age of seven and has proved that she is a serious contender with a bright future.
