A heavy storm left a trail of destruction in Ward 16 of Rushinga District last Tuesday.

Rushinga Member of the National Assembly Cde Tendai Nyabani confirmed the destruction which left some families homeless, while some learners have stopped attending lessons after Huruma Primary School was also destroyed.

A total of 42 households were affected as most roofs were blown off. The most affected villages include Baureni, Chinobukira, Chirize, Fambai, Kasuro and Murefu.

“Our area was hit by strong winds that were accompanied by heavy rains,” said Cde Nyabani.

“The most affected area is Ward 16 which is Haruma. A total of 42 households were destroyed as well as the local primary school.

“Some of the houses had their roofs blown off, while some of the walls were also destroyed, leaving people without shelter and food. Books and other learning materials were also destroyed and some of the learners have since stopped attending lessons.

“When I visited this school, learners were being housed in one block and the situation there is not conducive for proper learning.”

Cde Nyabani said some of the affected families are sleeping in the open, while some are being accommodated by neighbours.

“We cannot estimate the total cost of the destroyed property, but it is a huge cost. At some households, two or three houses were destroyed,” he said.
