Popular local pageant Miss Carnival is being re-branded to Miss Tourism Zimbabwe in line with the sector’s mandate to promote Zimbabwe’s culture and tourism. The re-branding will coincide with the relaunch of the pageant today at the Meikles Hotel. The pageant was last held in 2014 where Gamuchirayi Kujeke was crowned winner and later competed in the Miss Tourism International pageant held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia later that year.Chengetai Kanonhuwa who was first princess in the Miss World Zimbabwe 2015 beauty pageant was later made the face of Zimbabwe’ tourism in line with the agreement between Miss Zimbabwe Trust.

Pageant chaperon Barbara Mzembi said the re-branding would not change the concept of the pageant.

“We have noticed that there is a gap between the implications of a ‘carnival’ and the cultural beliefs in Zimbabwe.

“The name ‘Miss Carnival’ did not really represent the goal of the pageant, which is to find a true tourism ambassador for Zimbabwe,” she said.

Mzembi said on selection of participants, the pageant will accommodate different types of girls.

“Although beauty and appearance are key factors, Miss Tourism Zimbabwe contestants do not necessarily have to be tall and slim.

“All races, backgrounds and shapes are welcome. Our main focus is their ability to represent our beautiful country to the world.

“We want to give an opportunity to talented, eloquent and charismatic girls to step into the limelight and shine where otherwise it would have not been possible and be a true tourism ambassador,” she said.

She said that they are also advocating for transparency and professionalism in the management of the pageant by inviting independent bodies.

“Miss Tourism intends to give value to all stakeholders; sponsors, contestants, the girl child and the community at large.

Our goal is to be the most popular, trusted and respected beauty pageant that brings entertainment, fantasy and enjoyment to every Zimbabwean household and beyond,” she said.

Mzembi said they want to represent Zimbabwe’s culture and diversity.

“This pageant will give the opportunity to everyone as well as the lower income earners to also feel good by contributing to the Miss Tourism pageant and the noble cause for the girl child,” she added.
