THERE was no stopping young Zimbabwean rider Kuda Mhene (Jnr) at the Uganda National Motocross Championship at Entebbe’s Garuga track on Sunday.  The 10-year-old Lomagundi College Primary School’s Grade Five pupil stole the thunder from Uganda’s top junior motocross riders during the one-day meet in which he managed to win all his races in the 65cc A Class before a good crowd of about 3 000.

Mounting his KTM bike, Kuda Mhene (Jnr) was just in a class of his own as he swept the board, winning all the three heats in the 65cc A Class where he came up against Uganda’s top junior riders Fortune Ssentamu, Ben Nsumba and Waleed Omar.

According to reports from Entebbe, the weather was hot but the racing even hotter as guest rider from Zimbabwe, Kuda Mhene (Jnr), “rode like a demon” in all the three heats which he won with ease against some of Uganda’s best — Ssentamu, Nsumba and Omar — to emerge as the overall winner in their class.

During Sunday’s Uganda National Motocross Championship, Mhene (Jnr) was under the guidance of his father and trainer, Kuda Mhene (Snr), who said from Entebbe that the track was prepped to perfection and “you could see that the organisers did make a huge effort spraying generous amounts of water down leading up to this mammoth  event”.

“When we arrived in Entebbe, everybody was talking about Kuda, who was a guest rider at this event, and he did not disappoint either, as he outclassed the Ugandans in the 65cc A Class. The boy was just at his best.

“In the first heat, he cleared all the jumps and I had to tell him to slow down. The track was full of people. I think there were about 3 000 spectators who all came to watch the Zimbabwean boy who was just a joy to watch in the 65cc Class which had a total of 12 riders,” said his father.

The small wheels of the 65cc bikes makes it difficult for the riders to ride thick sand, but it was Zimbabwe all the time when the 65s were riding as Kuda Mhene (Jnr) finished first in heat one, two and three to take the first step on the podium at the end of business on Sunday at the tough Garuga track in Entebbe.

Kuda (Jnr) finally crowned a memorable outing at the Uganda National Motocross Championship by taking first place again in the third and final heat, beating Omar, Nsumba and Ssentamu into second, third and fourth places respectively.
