THE Zanu PF Politburo has appointed secretary for Security Cde Lovemore Matuke to investigate the power behind the indiscipline and delinquent behaviour of some Youth League members who were recently suspended for defying the party’s leadership and soiling the image of the ruling party.

Those suspended are Cde Pupurai Togarepi, who was the Secretary for the Youth League and his deputy Cde Lewis Matutu.

The league’s national commissar Mr Godfrey Tsenengamu was expelled after he continued to criticise the party in public and refused to attend the Chitepo School of Ideology.

Zanu PF believes some bigwigs within the party were behind the behaviour of the three.

Briefing the media soon after the 338 Politburo session in Harare on Wednesday, the party’s secretary for administration Dr Obert Mpofu said the Politburo deliberated on issues relating to indiscipline among party members.

The issue of indiscipline within the party was discussed extensively in the Politburo meeting. “This matter also received a lot of attention and it has become very clear that in some cases, if not in most cases, these youths are being handled by some senior members of the party, and as a result of that, the secretary for security Cde Matuke has been directed by the Politburo to establish exactly where this indiscipline is emanating from,” said Dr Mpofu.

“The members feel that it is very clear that the youths, especially those that have been issuing statements in the last few weeks denigrating the leadership of the party, are being handled somewhere.”

Cde Matuke said they were investigating if there were any people handling Mr Tsenengamu from within the party.

“We want to find out who his handlers are that are giving him information with which he is damaging the party,” he said. “We expect the exercise to be complete in two weeks’ time, we will then submit the findings to the Politburo.”

Dr Mpofu revealed that one of the issues discussed in the Politburo meeting was the misconduct of some Members of Parliament.

He said the Politburo also discussed at length issues surrounding the conduct of party cadres deployed to Parliament.

“We are talking about the Members of Parliament that were deployed to Parliament,” said Dr Mpofu. “More importantly, correct measures will be taken on the cadres who do not commit themselves to the process of Parliament, especially absenteeism, which has led to lack of quorums.” Dr Mpofu revealed that there were instances when debate in Parliament had to be adjourned due to lack of the requisite quorums.

Such acts should not be done and will not be tolerated by the party, he said.
