MANICALAND has the highest number of safe havens to accommodate and protect victims of gender based violence (GBV) while their cases are being processed, an official has said.

Speaking to The Herald recently, Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development provincial administrative officer Mr Confidence Mungayi said Manicaland had the highest number of safe shelters that were established in three districts – Mutare, Mutasa and Buhera.

He said this initiative was meant to promote gender equality and equity in the province.

“In promoting gender equality and equity the ministry, with the support of implementing partners, set up safe shelters, which are housing units that assist victims of GBV with temporary shelter and reprieve from the perpetrator while their GBV-related cases are being looked into,” he said.
