Kwekwe General Hospital has sent an appeal to the Government for drugs to help over 14 people admitted there after a bus they were travelling in veered off the road and plunged into a ditch on Monday.

Kwekwe District Administrator Mr Fortune Mpungu said they had activated the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) to mobilise funds for the needed drugs.

“The hospital communicated that there were some shortages of drugs that needed to be administered on the accident victims who are still in hospital,” he said.

“We understand the hospital had no adequate drugs, so we have liaised with the national civil protection unit and they have since raised some money towards that.”

Mr Mpungu said some of the people sustained fractures and needed close attention.

“The CPU has released some funds, but we are still in liaison with the hospital authorities on other drugs that they may be in need, but were not immediately available,” he said.

Scores of people were injured when the Tomb Motorways bus, contracted by Zupco to ply the Kwekwe-Redcliff route, was involved in an accident.

The bus was bound for Redcliff’s high density suburb of Torwood and had over 80 commuters on board, according to the police.

On Tuesday, Redcliff Mayor Councillor Clayton Masiyatsva, together with other Redcliff Municipality officials, visited the injured at the hospital.

The driver of the bus attributed the accident to brake failure.
