JUST IN: Chinese Embassy donates PPEs to Mash-West journalists

China, through its Zimbabwean embassy, last week donated face masks to media houses and at least 35 practicing journalists in Mashonaland West province.

The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) Mashonaland West chapter sourced the masks.

The donation is expected to protect journalists working on the frontline to help disseminate COVID-19 information.

The media fraternity has lost journalists who have succumbed to the second wave of the pandemic.

Recently, ZBC diplomatic correspondent, Janet Munyaka, veteran journalist Charles Kawadza and Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) secretary general, Foster Dongozi succumbed to the virus.

ZUJ Mashonaland West secretary general, Paul Pindani said the masks were going to safeguard journalists from the virus.

“We received 10 boxes of surgical face masks from the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe. Journalists bear the brunt daily to provide news articles but some lack enough PPEs,” said Pindani.

He said each media house and practicing journalists received its share of the donation.

The Chinese embassy’s Economic and Commercial Counsellor Mr Xiaoming Zou during the recent donation of PPEs to Chinhoyi High School promised to support the media.

He said the Chinese embassy was concerned about the effects of the pandemic in Zimbabwean schools and the media fraternity.
