Harare-based Imbube group has released a new album ‘Umkhonto Ovuthayo’ which is set to launch them as a force to reckon with in the entertainment industry. The album, which carries eight tracks, is accompanied by a DVD album. In an interview, the group’s lead vocalist Opt Moyo said the main aim was for Imbube type of music to go beyond Matabeleland.“Imbube originated in Matabeleland but we feel it’s high time that we take this type of music firstly across the country and across the world eventually,” Moyo said.

To achieve this, Moyo said they were going to modify the genre so that it did not only appeal to people from Matabeleland but that it appeals to everyone regardless of one’s background.

“We feel that it is high time that this genre goes across the country, continent and the world. So we have decided to modify the genre by adding some flares like singing not only in Ndebele but in different languages like what we have already done on this album,” he said.

“We have added Shona and Tonga, we also want to sing in English so that we incorporate everyone and that the genre is not limited to a certain type of people,” he said.

“A number of genres originated from different parts of the country but expanded worldwide and that is what we want to do. We don’t to be recognised as people from Matabeleland,” he said.

He highlighted that their music incorporates a lot of issues from gospel to social life, day to day life.

“We are into preaching the word of God, we also preach unity in society, country and we advocate for peace in marriages and also the country at large,” he said.

“We also give advice to young children especially on issues of children’s rights so that they do not abuse their rights by indulging in activities which will destroy them at the end of the day,” he said.

The group consists of eight members, Opt Moyo, the lead vocalist, Kholwani Dube, Shelton Moyo,Trinity Moyo, Bright Mlalalazi, Buzani Nyathi, Bhekimpilo Tshuma and Method Moyo.
