A Marondera businessman and farmer Mr Johannes Boreman lost property worth over $25 000 at his residence to armed robbers on Sunday night.

The two armed robbers assaulted Mr Boreman and his wife with an iron bar before turning his house upside down.

Police acting spokesperson for Mashonaland East Province, Assistant Inspector Tendai Mwanza said the two robbers are still at large.

“Mr Boreman (74) was playing with his dog in the dining room before he decided to let the dog out through the kitchen door. When he opened the kitchen door, two unknown men entered his house and started demanding cash,” he said.

Asst Insp Mwanza said one of the robbers struck Mr Boreman with an iron bar on the head.

“One of the robbers struck Mr Boreman with an iron bar on the head and he fell down before they used an electric cable to tie his legs and arms.

“Mrs Boreman heard the noise and rushed to the scene intending to rescue her husband, but she was struck with the same iron bar on her back,” he said.

“Mr Boreman told robbers that he had only $30 in cash and pleaded with the robbers to take whatever they wanted, but spare his and his wife’s lives,” Asst Insp Mwanza  said.

“Robbers proceeded to other rooms in search of cash, but to no avail. They proceeded to take two 24 volts batteries, two 12 volts power link inverters, black Lenovo laptop, three 12 volts batteries and a 52 inch television and they loaded the goods into Mr Boreman’s Isuzu pick-up truck with the registration number AAP 0315 and drove away,” he said.

He said Mr Boreman and his wife managed to free themselves and reported the matter to the police, but no arrest have been made to date.

“Mr Boreman and his wife are admitted at Borrowdale Hospital in Marondera where their condition is stable. We are appealing to members of the public to be on the look out of two criminals using a white Isuzu vehicle, furthermore people should make sure that they do not open doors at night and all windows must be secured to avoid intruders,” Asst Insp Mwanza said.
