SEVEN cable thieves were convicted and sentenced to a total of 68 years on separate occasions after they were convicted of stealing copper cables worth thousands of dollars across the country last year. Zesa Holdings yesterday said in a statement that the seven were convicted between October and December last year. Most of the cases occurred on farms.

The power utility said in one of the cases, Godwin Thomas Mwachande (23) was arrested on September 24 for vandalising a 100kva transformer at Kangela 6 Dambanzara Village in Karoi.

“He appeared before a Karoi Regional Magistrate on October 10 and was sentenced to an effective 10 year imprisonment.

“Mwachande’s accomplice, Everson Bhaka who was on the run, was arrested on November 8 and taken to court where he was sentenced to 10 years in prison on November 29.” — HR.
