About 10 photographers displayed their works at an exhibition organised by the Community Arts Project at Area D Community Centre recently. The exhibition was held to expose photographers that were trained by the Community Arts Project to take pictures of several societal issues.= Abraham Muendesi who is the acting director of the project said these made the first group of photographers to be trained by the organisation.“This was the first group to be trained and the exhibition was meant to showcase what they have done,” he said.

He was happy that the exhibition was highly subscribed and hopes that the pictures have delivered important social messages.

“People came for the exhibition and our hope is that the pictures have done justice in letting the society know about several issues that are important in our lives,” he said.

Explaining about the project Muendesi said their main objective is to contribute to the increase in awareness, prevention and protection of children from the risks and realities of child abuse.

“Through this intervention CAP has been carrying out activities that create platforms of sharing and self expression. We are targeting children and communities,” he said.

He said through photo voice they want to enable people to record and reflect on their community’s strengths and concerns.

“We want to promote cultural and knowledge about important issues through large and small group discussions of photographs,” he said.

The acting director said by engaging the young stars in such initiatives they are increasing confidence and stronger sense of togetherness with other participants.

“This time when the participants go into their community to take photographs related to the theme they would have agreed. For example, if they agree on environment they look at anything related to environment and the well being of children,” he said.

He said their programme also gives participants an understanding of their community.

“They will also understand their community better. This project helps them a lot in understanding what is all about community relations,” he said.
