GOVERNMENT has warned bus and other public service vehicle drivers to stick to the set speed limits as stipulated by the law or risk having their licences cancelled for non-compliance.

Speaking at the launch of the 2024 Easter Holiday campaign in Harare yesterday, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona said road accidents have now become the single largest killer of young people, between the ages of 25 and 45 worldwide.

“In Zimbabwe, a road traffic crash occurs every 15 minutes, this results in about five people being killed, while about 38 people are injured every single day on our roads. Just last year some 2 089 people lost their lives on our roads. We mustn’t look at these facts as mere figures, but as actual human beings, someone’s father, mother, brother, sister or child whose lives were cut short by the behaviour of another human being or their misjudgement.

“Clearly the time comes when we need to collectively agree to put a stop to this worrisome trend and start reversing those numbers.

“We cannot continue on this trajectory; something has to give,” he said in a speech read on his behalf by his deputy Joshua Sacco.

He said road traffic accidents also have dire economic consequences, to families of the affected, and the economy at large.
