Zimbabwe National Roads Administration has released $140 000 to Chivi Rural District Council for rehabilitation and maintenance of roads.

Chivi RDC chief executive Mr Tariro Matavire said the money, which has since been deposited into the local authority’s account, will assist in repairing roads and bridges destroyed by Cyclone Dineo-induced floods in February this year.

He said the RDC had initially received $20 000, used to repair three bridges in the district.

“The $20 000 we received was used for the repair of the Badza and Dinditi Bridge in Chivi South and Vutete in Chivi North,” Mr Matavire said. He said contracts for the second batch of $121 000 had been crafted with work expected to start soon.

“We are targeting to rehabilitate and maintain a total of 300 kilometres of our roads.

“Most roads in the district were no longer accessible as they were destroyed by Cyclone Dineo-induced floods in February.
“We are moving with haste to finish the projects before the onset of the rainy season in October.”

Mr Matavire said council would also tar the one kilometre stretch of road at Chivi Growth Point. He said council had also acquired a grader and two tractors, but the equipment was not adequate.

The project is expected to be done in three months.

Infrastructure that include roads, bridges, clinics, schools and homes mainly in Chivi, Mwenezi and Tsholotsho in Matabeleland North was destroyed by the Cyclone Dineo-induced floods.
