The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) yesterday announced the Nomination Court and poll dates for Chiredzi Rural District Council Ward 12 local authority by-election. The Nomination Court will be held on September 25 at the offices of the Chiredzi chief executive from 10am to 4pm, while the election date is October 26.

In a statement, ZEC chief elections officer Mr Utoile Silaigwana said the holding of the by-election was in line with section 121A of the Electoral Act (Chapter 2:13).

“It is hereby notified in terms of section 121A of the Electoral Act (Chapter 2:13), that following the resignation of the councillor in respect of Ward 12 of Chiredzi rural district council, a vacancy has arisen,” said Mr Silaigwana “The nomination court for purposes of receiving nomination of candidates for elections as councillor for the vacant ward shall sit on Wednesday, 25 September 2019 commencing at 1000hrs to 1600hrs. “The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission fixes Saturday, 26th October, 2019 as the day on which a poll shall take place if a poll becomes necessary in terms of Section 125 (4) (b) of the Election Act.”

The post fell vacant following the resignation of Councillor Cde Andrew Ndebele of Zanu-PF who had been elected in the July 31 2018 harmonised elections.

Since the conduct of the harmonised elections in July last year, a number of by-elections for both local authorities and national assembly have been held, with Zanu-PF winning most of the seats.
