Zimbabwe will bid to host the Fifa World Cup in 2034 as it will by then have the capacity to host such a mega event when Africa gets another chance of hosting the tournament, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Walter Mzembi has said.Speaking after meeting Chief Mutoko (Philemon Nyachoto) at his offices in Harare, who visited to congratulate him after Zimbabwe recently won the World Best Tourism Destination for 2014 Award and the World Favourite Cultural Destination Award, Minister Mzembi said he had talked to Fifa president Joseph Sepp Blatter during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa who told him that it was possible for Zimbabwe to host the mega event.

He said there was need for the country to keep on dreaming big to achieve such a feat.

“I spoke to FIFA president Sepp Blatter during the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa and he told me that it was possible for Zimbabwe to host the 2034 Fifa World Cup as long as we keep on having such big dreams and vision,” he said.

“Nothing can stop us from hosting the 2034 Fifa World Cup and we are going to put our bid to host it no matter what.”

Minister Mzembi said this was the proper time to market the country as a favourite host of the 2034 Fifa World Cup.

“If we are to host the 2034 Fifa World Cup this is the right time to start marketing our country as a safe tourist destination,” he said.

Minister Mzembi said Zimbabwe was endowed with a lot of natural resources and monuments which are yet to be recognised as tourist destinations.

“We have a lot of ruins that are fit to be part of Zimbabwe’s tourist attractions across the country but they are being left idle because the ministry is putting a lot of focus on those that are already established.

“I am appealing to the Ministry of Tourism to move out of Harare and lift other areas with ruins across the country to promote domestic tourism,” he said.

Chief Mutoko thanked President Mugabe for choosing ministers like Cde Mzembi who are working hard for the benefit of the country at large.

The meeting was also attended by Warriors international striker Edward Sadomba who urged all those in the sporting field to come forward and support Minister Mzembi in his vision of hosting the Fifa World Cup.

“I would like to urge all those Zimbabweans in the sporting arena to put their support on Minister Mzembi’s vision to make sure that the biggest soccer tournament in hosted here,” he said.

    Totally gobsmacked.

Where are the priorities when we cannot guarantee power, clean water etc., to say the least, before we engage in this flight of fancy? The bidding process itself is expensive without any guarantee of winning the bid and it is money that could be best used to alleviate the suffering. In any case, who is going to lend money for the infrastructural developments that
need to be done when we are failing to pay all our other debts that have to be paid before we can get any new lines of credit to revive the economy?

But these people in their cushy lifestyle funded by taxpayers do not think of it and have developed illusions of grandeur. Inga zvavo vakagarika vanoronga zvokuzvifadza ruzhinji rwuchidya nhoko dzezvironda. No wonder we are where we are when we have such misguided leaders who have become calloused to the suffering of many.

    • 48Mheta11

The minister is saying its possible and so are many people. 2034 will be a completely changed Zimbabwe. Its very possible

      • logic

Given that they have had 34 years to run down the country, what makes you think, with the same lot that has declared they will run till donkeys have grown horns, that anything will change? In any case isn’t this dream typical of the ZANU PF way where they think things are done last minute? The bidding process would start now because you need to take something to FIFA to sell the idea so the money would have to start to be invested now; money which we do not have. Even if we had it it would be better used for necessities.Therein lies the issue.

And I restate, start by fulfilling the dream of paying down the debt and getting the country moving again, not to pile on debt from the consumerism on our children.

    • Sandura1

wake up thats 20 years on. A lot of things can happen in between. You will a very old man then.

      • logic

That is all you can say to argue your case – speculation? We deal with realities not speculation and the reality is this is a
party with defunct policies hell-bent on staying in power at whatever
cost. They have failed in 34 years so how is giving the same people another 20 going to change anything?

This is the same speculative approach that has had a so-called friend balking at
giving loans to Zimbabwe. Right now a second delegation has been dispatched to
beg in China and I bet you the result will be the same – nothing of substance because there is much talk but no credible action platform.

And of course in your intelligence you would even know my age to surmise my age and gender! Didn’t know you could read that from reading a posting but of course that is the level of intellect of defenders of this nonsense. If that is the best of a comeback better kurega. The theme of FIFA is “Say no to racism”. Compare that with President Mugabe remarks whilst launching the A1 permits in Chinhoyi recently: “do not sup with whites and no farmland would be returned to whites again. Some of my ministers are being mentioned here. They are refusing to remove white farmers from their constituencies.” Let us get the politics correct first: there is no reason to deprive, harass, and bludgeon a certain section of Zimbabweans based on skin color. Those racist actions and remarks have no place in FIFA’s theme of eradicating racism in all spheres of life. Let the “Commander-In-Chief” be appropriately warned, advised and counselled, just for a start!

I think people are missing the point that by then, 20 years from now, it won’t be the same government, same problems. If only as one people we shared the same dream and move on past this current hardship. Things change, but it doesn’t take one man to do such a change. He might help inspire but work is done by all. One goal, one dream means 2034 Zimbabwe World Cup!

I like the fact that he did not dream next 10 years or so because i’m sure we still will be facing some challenges which need more attention than soccer.

Mr minister I like pple who thin like u, you are a visionary minister, absolutely not moved by what is around you but you focus on what is ahead. Synonymous comments posted here degrading your vision & goal were said to the pple of Babel who wanted to build a tower that reached heaven, even though this was impossible listen to what God said “Genesis 11:6
And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them”. All you need minister is pple unified for a noble cause like this, all you need are Zimbos that believe and tell you what, we can do it. We might not have the best infrastructure right now but do you know what your 2034 vision says, it says 20 yrs from now we will be well up zvekuti World Cup singayi hosta. I like your thinking, it’s not surprising you are the best, you think BIG!!!!

Mr Minister I like your thinking! You are a visionary indeed. I love the fact that your thinking is not shaped by current circumstances in your vicinity. Synonymous degrading comments could have been said to people from Babel who built the great tower that was to reach heaven but listen to what God said in Genesis 11:6 And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. All you need is a unified people that believe, all you need are Zimbos who can look beyond their current circumstances & tell you what sir, “we believe”. Your vision tell a story, your vision is good prophesy, it simple says 20 yrs from now Zimbabwe will be well up zvekuti we can host World Cup. Keep on thinking BIG. Death & life is in the power of the tongue, as far as Abraham could see God gave, Zimbabwe what do you see? There is power in imagination & since we are made in the image of this creative God it means creative power is inherent in us, speak it & it shall come to pass, Mr Minister plan it & you shall have it.

Zimbabwe will bid to host the Fifa World Cup in 2034 as it will by then have the capacity to host such a mega event when Africa gets another chance of hosting the tournament.

Start with upgrading Zim warriors, its a better vision

  • Shoko Ndirori

2034 World Cup Zimbabwe Host is achievable:-
    - A new generation of leaders will be panyanga

    - Our economy will definitely not the same as today
    - The Zimbabwean dream / vision will probably be clearly defined then
    - It gives us enough time as hosts to build our team; most are not yet born! several are below 10 / 5 years – what an opportunity!

Minister Mzembi if you could please start laying the foundation for 2034 to happen. But a 201 conversation with Sepp Blatter would he still remember? I thought there are bidding documents which are submitted well in advance. And the infrastructure has to be in place or the financial clout be there to improve on the infrastructure.

    To quote:-

“Minister Mzembi said Zimbabwe was endowed with a lot of natural resources and monuments which are yet to be recognised as tourist destinations.

The country is becoming a ruin (hope that will attract the tourist) Chitungwiza is grinding to a halt, Bulawayo’s industrial sector is dead, Harare’s water supply is a tourist attraction in itself. And the country’s energy woes – a black out during the month long event would be great for the country’s image would it?

Minister Mzembi your noble vision is worth supporting. But to get to 2034 let us start where we are – 2014, 2015…..Zimbabweans need to live and get essential basic services, jobs, food on the table etc.

Meanwhile Minister Mzembi and team could you please make sure the infrastructure and finances are in place for Zimbabwe to successfully host the Zone Six Games later this year.
