Silver Screen with Tafadzwa Zimoyo
The rains that fell on Independence Day could not dampen the spirits of Zimbabweans from celebrating this historic day to mark the liberation of Zimbabwe and the national broadcaster, ZTV, lived up to expectations and ensured that people at home were kept updated on the proceedings taking place at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.

The broadcaster rose to the occasion and did not disappoint.

ZTV silenced their critics who normally wait for national events of this magnitude to come up with loads of blame most of which will be aimed at downplaying the national cause and also rubbishing the broadcaster as a good-for-nothing entity which is only good at coming up with shoddy broadcasting.

If the truth should be told, ZTV have upped their game and they are making huge strides in an effort of match standards set by their neighbour, South Africa as well as Nigeria.

It was also a good thing to see the contestants in the Miss World Zimbabwe being beamed live on ZTV as part of their boot-camp since this ensured that viewers were kept updated.

The gorgeous models will be going for the finals at a venue in Shamva this week, and according to reports currently doing the rounds, it is said that the event will be screened live.

It is encouraging to note that ZTV are now making an effort to follow up on important events taking place around the country, and with this kind of drive, it will not be later that we see the broadcaster turning into one of the best improved on the continent.

Talking of continental issues, DStv screened the South African Music Awards (SAMA) that were taking place in South Africa on Sunday.

The red-carpet event saw some of the South African artistes who excelled in their various fields being honoured and awarded for their efforts.

Held at the Sun City, the gala event, which was hosted by Hip-Hop Pantsula, accorded Zimbabweans an insight into how our South African neighbours do their things. I hope ZTV and ZIMA learnt something in how things can be run when we are talking of national awards.

Meanwhile, the world is waiting with bated breath for the big fight pitting boxing heavyweights Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquio which is scheduled for May 3 and DStv viewers will be able to view this historic fight on SuperSport 6 Maximo.

Still on DStv, in one of the most exciting additions to the variety and scope of entertainment on DStv yet, MultiChoice Africa will be launching a new multi-purpose channel, ITV Choice, in May.

Liz Dziva, publicity and public relations manager of MultiChoice Zimbabwe, said ITV was one of the best-known brands in British broadcasting, with a long and successful history of service to Britain and the world.

ITV Choice which will make its African debut following a deal between MultiChoice Africa and ITV Studios Global Entertainment, and will be available on channel 123 to DStv Premium bouquet subscribers from 6pm on Tuesday May 5.

Featuring a wide range of great British entertainment, ITV Choice offers an impressive schedule that includes Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Big Star’s Little Star from 12 Yard and Keep It In The Family from ITV Studios and Over The Top Productions.

Celebrities will master variety acts in ITV Studios’ Get Your Act Together, while additional fun comes from shows such as 12 Yard’s Eggheads and Coach Trip. The drama offering features the recently-launched and highly-rated Poldark, a period drama adaptation of the well-known classic novels of the same name, produced by Mammoth Screen. This is a remake of the old 70s show but carries with it a new style and some of television’s best new stars.

Also coming up are Arthur & George, Buffalo Pictures’ adaptation of Julian Barnes’ novel about the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, starring by Martin Clunes, as well as ITV Studios’ World War Two drama Home Fires.

The channel also features detective series Vera and Murdoch Mysteries and two of Britain’s best-loved soaps, Coronation Street and Emmerdale.
