numbers.
After the vehicle left, the guard went to investigate and discovered the dumped foetus before making a police report.
The incident occurred on September 15 this year and it took the police up to three weeks to trace the couple through Central Vehicle Registry checks.
The vehicle in question had changed hands on several occasions without any formal change of ownership.
Police had to be referred to several people until they got the suspects. Harare provincial police spokesman Inspector Tedius Chibanda confirmed the incident saying the two had been arrested and tests were still being conducted on the woman.
“A woman and a man who are believed to be lovers have since been arrested in connection with unlawful termination of pregnancy.
“It is suspected that the duo’s relationship was no longer smooth resulting in the two conniving to terminate pregnancy and dump the foetus. A security guard who recorded the registration numbers discovered the foetus a few minutes after the couple had driven off,” said Insp Chibanda.
He urged motorists to ensure they change ownership of their vehicles each time they sell or buy, stressing there was a danger of being dragged into offences committed by the latest vehicle user as police normally trace the offenders through the CVR.
“The owner of the vehicle according to the CVR records is normally bothered in cases committed by the people who would have bought the vehicle from him and continue using it without change of ownership.
“In this case, many people bought the vehicle and passed it to many others without changing ownership.
“We had to visit the original owner who, referred the police to the next owner.
“The police had to be referred from one motorist to the other until they reached the current user,” said Insp Chibanda.
The couple is set to appear in court soon.
