Winter a tough time to stay health
You are what you eat

You are what you eat

The long term effects of a healthy diet go far beyond your health and wellness. The food you eat -from wrinkle-fighting antioxidants in fruits and vegetables to hydrating healthy fats in fish- matter to your skin almost as much as it does to your waistline. The type off food that you take, combined with an active lifestyle help you to achieve a natural glow and maintain energy levels throughout the day. There is a school of thought that beauty, youth and radiance can be achieved by applying lipstick, or an expensive cream, some to the extent of using harmful skin lighteners.

The burning question of late is when was this rule about beauty, youth and radiance made? This beauty illusion has been going on for too long.

So, what is the real bottom line? Cosmetics do enhance what we already have but no product can ever match the transformation effects of a healthy lifestyle. Boom.

Better healthy lifestyle habit s are the foundation for achieving, maintaining a most radiant self. Most of us are after a short-cut that eliminates the need for us to make a long-term commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Today many depend on a product, a short term diet (as most of them are), or on popping a slimming pill for that matter. Is it due to busy schedules or is it for want of a quick fix?

One thing for sure, there are no quick fixes to be healthy. It is a culmination of dedication, determination and commitment to a different way of living – one which is a combination of good eating, physical activity and mental wellness.

Here’s the secret. Wellness is a journey, but one that feels incredible. It takes time, but there is no time better spent. The journey starts with listening to your body, knowing your body and giving your body what it needs, beyond good healthy food.

Winter can be a tough time to stay healthy – we tend to stay indoors much more and in much closer proximity to friends, family, and colleagues who may have the flu or such symptoms. It’s also true that it’s easy to gain weight over winter because winter comfort foods are often energy dense, and it is less appealing to exercise when it is chilly. That’s why watching what you eat in winter is very important.

It’s a good idea to eat a range of foods with a variety of nutrients. One way to ensure that you do this is to eat foods with a range of different colours. Think avocado, freshly sliced grapefruit or a naartjie, butter nut and carrot soup, a vegetable curry with spinach and green beans, roast sweet potato, or tomato and aubergine bake.

It is key to start your day with a wholesome breakfast, which in winter can be a special kind of treat. Not only does a warm breakfast help to warm you up quickly, but warm breakfasts can be delicious and experimental. Try cooking oats in milk with raisins or fresh berries and skip the sugar or honey. You can also boil or poach eggs and serve them on whole wheat toast with roasted cherry tomatoes, baby spinach and sliced avocado. You can add whatever else favourite foods working from a healthy base.

Remember our fruit. Winter is the season for delicious citrus fruits including easy peeling and sweet naartjies. Other fruits like pineapple, granadilla, and gooseberries are also in season. These are perfect for a snack or as a dessert to ensure you get enough fruit in your diet every day. Lemons can add delicious flavour to many dishes or add a slice to a cup of hot water as an alternative to tea and coffee.

Achieve a double benefit of keep fit and keeping the winter chills out by putting on your sneakers and getting active!

Physical activity and exercise is a major contributor to a healthy lifestyle. Unhealthy living may manifest itself in obesity, weakness, lack of endurance, and overall poor health that may foster disease development.

While most individuals can begin moderate exercise, such as walking, running and swimming without a medical examination, others may need to consult a doctor before beginning more vigorous exercise, for instance:

Individuals with heart or lung disease, asthma, arthritis, or osteoporosis

Individuals who experience chest pressure or pain with exertion, or who develop fatigue or shortness of breath easily

Individuals with conditions that increase their risks of developing coronary heart disease, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cigarette smoking, high blood cholesterol, or having family members who had early onset heart attacks and coronary heart disease

Individuals who are morbidly obese

The best beauty product is a healthy lifestyle. You can achieve this by making smart and healthy choices. While exercising throughout the year will improve your body’s immunity, it is important to keep an eye on your health. What’s one thing you can do today to actively support your youthfulness, inside and out? Drink enough water, eat whole, unprocessed foods including lots of fruit and vegetables. This will overtime help combat effects such as wrinkles, dull skin and inflammation of your bodily organs. You must also get enough sleep.

If you do feel a cold coming on, try to do less strenuous exercises instead. Summer bodies are made in winter, so now may also be a good time to perfect your weight loss strategy. In a nutshell, seeing real results is infinitely more satisfying than applying a cream every night with the blind hope of staving off a wrinkle or getting rid of that podge.

When we shift our focus beyond the beauty products, we see how incredibly empowering it is to make lifestyle choices that have a positive effect on the way we look and feel. It’s the chance to see a glow in your complexion without relying on toxic cosmetics and it’s the knowledge that you are reshaping yourself — mentally, physically, emotionally — one decision at a time. Wellness is also about playing an active part in the way you will look and feel into the future. Your body needs and deserves this care and you have the power to deliver.
