What they see on Mother’s Day

Tafadzwa Zimoyo : Lifestyle Writer

Tomorrow the world celebrates Mother’s Day, a time to honour mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers for their contribution to family and society. It may be yet another American invention that has become the centre of commercialised hype with emphasis on shopping for presents, but the day carries special meaning to many people who make it a point of reminding special women in their lives that they matter. This year, we decided to focus on the mothers we met in the streets and asked them what the day means to them and their expectations:

Motherhood is tough 24 hour job; no pay, no day off, sometimes it is unappreciated, but resignation is impossible. A mother is a woman who was created by God to bring love, joy, happiness and caring into his world. Being a mother is having a warm home that provides comfort and hope to those who are in despair. My statement to my lovely daughters and son is “Don’t despair. It is well with God.” It is now a thing of past to get gifts as with my children it is just like everyday love.

Mother’s Day is the time of observing and honouring mothers. To me it is a day to remember the fruits of my womb, thanking God how my children have been shaped and moulded. I also need moral support and prayers for my children, that would be the greatest gift of them all. God watches over them each day. My favourite saying I always tell my children each time they visit, before they leave: “My child have a good day”.

The greatest thing about being a parent is that every day is a fresh start. You always can say, today we are going to try this telling my children even my grandchildren, why can’t we try this. Having kids – the responsibility of rearing good, kind, ethical, responsible human beings – is the biggest job anyone can embark on. As with any risk, you have to take a leap of faith and ask lots of wonderful people for their help and guidance. I thank God every day for giving me the opportunity to parent. I also want to thank God that my mother is still alive although I am now also old.

My favourite statement is: “Idi kuti mukaverenga henyu kunze kwecover hameno henyu. In pangu ndapedza”. I always encourage my children continue learning, if you still have the energy. I tell them growing up we never had this before and make sure your children should not have the same problems like you had while growing up. The day is just normal to me. We should always celebrate motherhood. What I want on the day is to receive news that my children have achieved this or done best in whatever they are doing. Nothing material for now.

Being a mother means giving all and my very best for the sake of my boys and girls. To me the day is just like others but as a mother you should be able to protect your children. Mother’s Day is a time to thank God for the precious gift of the womb that money cannot buy.

Mother’s Day means a lot to me as it is a day for us mothers, celebrating the gift of motherhood and appreciating the wonderful gift which God gave us. A mother means a guidian angel. A statement I always tell my children is “I need you back home before 6pm”.

I am a prayer warrior. I am now a grandmother but the bottom line is I am a mother. I know if I am around with my children they always treat me right and the best but what I always pray about for them is the gift of love of which I am happy about. Seeing them happy makes me happier too. I am happy to be a mother.

When things are hard, don’t worry it is a phase that will pass. This is my statement to my one and only son. This day reminds me of my strength, my power as a woman and mother. To me a mother means love.

I can say that being a mother is a greatest gift and thing to happen to any woman. I am so happy that I am a mother. The Mother’s Day celebration is a day dedicated to all mothers out there but children should love their mothers everyday because no-one can replace a mother. If I wasn’t at work, I just wanted to stay home and enjoy with my children.
