Verification nets UZ cheat two years later

A HARARE man forged qualifications and worked for the University of Zimbabwe for two years as a painter. Washington Shonhiwa (40) defrauded the UZ of $40 000 in wages. He appeared before magistrate Ms Sharon Rutendo Rakafa on Friday last week. The case was remanded to September 22 for trial. Prosecutor Mr Devoted Gwashavanhu-Nyagano alleged that in June, the UZ announced that it was going to dismiss all unqualified employees.
The university then approached various examination boards verifying the qualifications of its employees.
The verification exercise showed that 14 employees were not qualified for their jobs, including Shonhiwa.
Shonhiwa worked for the UZ from April 26, 2005 up to August 7 this year. He had allegedly forged a painter’s Class 1 journeyman card to secure employment.
Shonhiwa was questioned by the university’s authorities in the presence of the Vice Chancellor.
He told them that he was a holder of a Class 4 journeyman card.
The university reported the matter to the police.
