United States sanctions rhetoric exposed

Ms Gumbonzvanda

Ms Gumbonzvanda

Farirai Machivenyika Senior Reporter—
Prominent civil society activist and Africa Union Ambassador on Child Marriages Ms Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda’s overwhelming nomination for the Cable News Network Hero Award came unstuck due to the US sanctions policy on Zimbabwe, exposing the myth the embargo is targeted at Zanu-PF and Government officials. The CNN Hero is a television special created by CNN to honour individuals who make extraordinary contributions to humanitarian aid and make a difference in their communities.

Writing on her Facebook wall, Ms Gumbonzvanda, who is the founder of Rozaria Memorial Trust and has won numerous awards in her fight against child marriages said: “Nominated or CNN Hero and considered ineligible because of US position on #Zimbabwe.

“I extend my profound appreciation to the many Zimbabwean and global friends who put forward my name for consideration this year for the CNN Hero. I will be forever grateful, always, nekusingaperi. On reading the fine print, we discovered that citizens of countries under US sanctions were not eligible for consideration.

“I felt sad for the many who had worked hard on this nomination. I also felt angry that I was being penalised for crimes committed by others. Any call for sanctions must be restricted to ensure that sanctions are targeted and apply to those who abuse rights and should not extend to ordinary citizens. Best wishes to all the 2017 nominees.”

Ms Gumbonzvanda could not be reached for comment as she had not responded to various inquiries sent to her, but according to the rules of the competition contained on the CNN website, citizens from “voided countries” are ineligible to enter or win the competition.

Reads part of the rules: “The awards programme is open to eligible nominees worldwide, who are citizens of countries other than voided countries (defined below).

‘Citizens of voided countries are ineligible to enter or win . . . CNN may determine in its sole discretion at any time during the awards programme that a country is a voided country.”

The voided countries include those sanctioned under the Office of Foreign Assets Control, which listed Zimbabwe, and has intercepted millions of dollars accruing to Zimbabwean companies. Political analyst Tafadzwa Mugwadi said the decision confirmed that sanctions on Zimbabwe were not targeted.

“The decision smacks of hypocrisy as it confirms the reality of its illegal sanctions against Zimbabwe and the potential of its people. It is quite shameful that the US is still captured in the past at a time when the world is competing to warm and charm our talents and our country,” he said.

“One would have expected the American civilisation as it were, to rethink its regrettable policies against our country and its people rather than remain stuck in the past,” said Mr Mugwadi.

The abortion of Ms Gumbonzvanda’s nomination comes at a time the MDC-Alliance has despatched a three-member delegation; comprising Messrs Tendai Biti, Nelson Chamisa and Welshman Ncube; to the United States to urge the Trump administration to maintain its illegal sanctions regime on Zimbabwe.

Lest we forget, we are talking of a country that took more than a decade to remove Nelson Mandela from its list of “world terrorists” after he became South Africa’s elected president. One must just feel sorry for the USA now. Consider that a clown like Donald Trump is the president.

    • TruthHurts!

Americans must stop eating Gmo-foods that are transforming them into ‘man-mountains’ without a corresponding increase on brain size. I wonder how Succuba and others like Mandevu (who invited me to have a discussion on sanctions) feel about this. If one can be denied a gong (that they can only display on a mantel-piece in their home) for doing ‘good work’ that touches the lives of other human-beings we can only imagine how it is like when we talk about economies? This is why our country must be alive to the evil tactics that Biti, Ncube and Chamisa have used for many years: courting more and more sanctions against their own country. We must condemn them. It is unforgivable. It means young people will continue to wallow in the pits of unemployment despite all government efforts to change their fortunes. What government is building they are destroying and the question must be asked; in whose interests are they doing it? Definitely, not our youths! The irony is that well-meaning people are fighting for young people who, unfortunately, lack insight about the origins of their own dismal situation even when they see them doing these evil deeds before their own eyes. What is soul-destroying is that it is the same youths whose lives have been destroyed by sanctions who will be running to applaud Biti, Ncube and Chamisa as soon as they land at RGM airport. Its sad.

      • succuba

Thats the rules of the CNN TV awards. ANY country that’s on the OFAC list cannot be considered… deal with it, it’s their competition and their rules.

I feel great, I have responded to your agreement to debate sanctions… you haven’t replied yet… why would that be TruthHurts!?

  • Piankhi

My people must stop looking for acceptance in charity and recognition from America. What is important is what we do for our people and countries. The award is nothing more than a distraction and deception from America in it’s guise to continue underhand tactics to stop the up rise of Africa. U.S. and U.K. sanctions only work if Africa keep engaging them and allow their foreign companies to continue to steal on the motherland. Africa make policies to cut ties and demand illegal sanction be removed from countries or kick their multi national mining companies and other resource thieves off the continent. Africa does not realize the power it has when it come to the world. The West and East cannot stay on top without having a hand on the African continent. Cut that hand off. Then you will see a change in policy. We do not need their awards or recognition of what blacks are suppose to be doing to help other blacks worldwide. It is our duty to create unity among all African descendant people that have been oppressed by our common enemies. That is called power.

  • Humba Makombe

Between 2004 and 2007 i was with the Department of Roads and ran some training courses with other persons from regional transport authorities. These programmes were funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) of the USA. However when it came to payment for the services rendered, i was told, “Thank you Makombe for the work you have done, we cannot give you $$ because of the stance our government has taken against your Zimbabwe, my Zimbabwe”..im just a little men, who had nothing to do with human rights abuses, perceived or real. But the money that was due to me was blocked. Then you have grown up ### man saying the sanctions are targetted, targeted at who? Im deeply saddened by what our fellow country men are doing.. Begging the super powers to press us hard, to keep the measures in place. Surely we are better than this, we can do better than this. Dewa Mavhunga mwana waaniko? you bring shame to who ever brought you on this planet. Kurai varume.

      @disqus_iz0MjBXQRk:disqus

I humbly ask you for proof of this, did the US say you would not be paid or was it someone in Zimbabwe?

Were you working directly for FHWA or sub-contracted?

I would like to take this further by contacting FHWA. Can you give me more information, names, dates etc.

      • Judas Iscariot

Maybe the US discovered Humba Makombe was being used as a front for Kasukuwere kkkkk. His comment is garbage

  • Pamire

Trump lost the election to Clinton in huge numbers and thanks to the rubbish electoral college system the winner loses . I feel for the MDC because President ED seems to be doing a good job . At this rate with the MDC rushing to the US , l will vote ZANU PF especially as they fight corruption like this . The next stop must be Wicknell Chivhayo ! Otherwise ED is a breath of fresh air .

    • John Jones

What has ED done to date other than policy statements and avoiding abrasive language against the West his predecessor used to use. You state you feel for MDC since your beloved ED seems to be doing a good job, Perhaps to you alone. To me he is yet to produce the actual results not talk talk talk only. Any fool can do the talking. You really do not need to tell anyone whom you would vote for. This is a private matter, Every government in the world must deliver on its promises and get the opposition to do their work as well of being a watch dog to false promises. Then when elections come hopefully on a level playing field it will be up to the citizens to make the judgement on whether ED has delivered or the opposition MDC or NPP could do better,. They then vote for whoever they think will deliver good service for them.

      • Loud Speaker

What has ED done to date other than policy statements and avoiding
abrasive language against the West his predecessor used to use
        =====================================================
And how long he been at the realm again?

  • Common Sense

Sad, as she has done good for the people…

However Herald, please note the sanctions are not illegal…..annoying and painful yes, but not illegal (please state why they are illegal if you disagree) and once the Government proves it can change it’s ways, then this nonsense can be lifted….

Also, CNN should have done it’s homework, they should know better than any people what the US state rules are… (and their own rules for the award!)

    • Nechinanga

Illegal because they are unilateral and not endorsed by the UN. Also, because they are abusing the privileged position of the US dollar in the international financial system. Sanctions are also an act of war.

  • succuba

Why do you think its hogwash CC?

  • succuba

That’s the rules of the CNN TV awards. ANY country that’s on the OFAC list cannot be considered… deal with it, it’s their competition and their rules.

They are CNN rules not US rules, this TV company can make any rules it chooses, hey if one of the rules were that anyone with blue eyes cannot compete, this would mean that anyone in Zimbabwe with blue eyes would be excluded as well as every other country…sheesh you really are scraping the barrel here TH!.

Can this person travel anywhere in the world?
Can this person buy or sell anything in the world?
How is she under sanctions…. ?

She can’t compete is a TV program because of CNN’s rules. Period.

While you are here why are you not participating in debate with me, you wanted it, come on get in there and debate.

    Truth Hurts…. hey

    • TruthHurts!

I dont think you have an understanding of what sanctions are, what they are about, how they destroy economies like a malignant cancerous tissue and how this has an impact on people. It is not the kind of thing you can disparagingly dismiss to score political points simply because you are not happy with the political party in power whether it does good or not for the country. Sanctions are imposed to destroy a whole nation not individuals. That is why people are asked to pull together to render them ineffectual. If all Zimbabweans had solidly stood behind that woman who was singled out for victimisation and shown their outrage at this overt, cowardly act the rednecks would be thinking twice before they tried it again! Alas, they are in good company. They have you, Biti, Chamisa, Ncube and the self-immolating urban youth to thank for their support. They will happily continue with their evil deeds!

      • succuba

So for clarity… name the sanctions here TruthHurts!… lets discuss here. Stop using the word sanctions as a collective noun and list them here singularly for discussion.

Come on TH! bring it on here…

You appear to have abandoned the other thread that you seemed eager to debate. Why would that be?

        • TruthHurts!

I think you need someone to explain that to you because I know that you know what sanctions are all about! I, therefore, refuse to play games. When you want to discuss issues and not tissues then we can do that.

          • succuba

Dodging the pertinent and difficult questions TH!?

            So explain to me here…

I think you are an empty vessel, and we all know what they do don’t we TH!

          • TruthHurts!

            I rest my case!

          • succuba

You have no case… you wanted a debate then ran away…. very shallow person with no substance.

          • TruthHurts!

How can I be accused of running away from a debate when the other side has little or no understanding of the topic? Unfortunately, if it is long distance education you want there is the Open University, ok? You need to polish up on your social skills too because you have a very unintelligent way of engaging other people.

          • succuba

I have understanding of the topic, it is you that is devoid of factual evidence to support you ludicrous assertions.

          • Loud Speaker

            You have been owned mate!

          • succuba

You wanted debate and now you are running away…. everyone here reading this can see you are afraid and you will show yourself up.

        • Nyandoro

          you are a reactionary

          • succuba

No, a realist. I hate liars, tell it like it is.

          • Cliff Chida

            No u are an idiot.

  • TruthHurts!

You cannot say I am playing the man instead of the ball here. If I am to win the ball I have to know the skills and talent of the player who has the ball. I just realised that the person who wants to have a debate with me has no knowledge on the subject. So why waste time on them? Rather signpost them to where they can get help!

    • Loud Speaker

Slice it whichever way you want..It is what it is!……Nice try though lol!

      • TruthHurts!

It has been ‘sliced’ as written.

        • succuba

Why are you a coward and running away from debate that YOU wanted… bring it on…

          • TruthHurts!

It is a waste of time arguing with a sanctions-denier when the sanctions imposing countries say they are in place. It does not make sense to me. If you say there are no sanctions and Robert Stewart British Minister for Africa and International Development comes here three days before the inauguration of the new President and says they are in place who are you to then say there are no sanctions? What Dhewa Mavhinga and Biti were asking the Americans to keep in place until the MDCs demands were met weren’t they sanctions. You then say off the top of your head there are no sanctions lets debate on that, isn’t it stupid to agree to debate on a topic that is without sense. I would rather be a coward refusing to engage a brain-dead moron on a non-existent topic in debate. May the same message be received by Loud Speaker. Serious people discuss issues and not tissues. The thing is; sanctions were imposed on Zimbabwe, true or false? If false tell me what it is that Stewart made reference to on his visit and what was that which the MDC crooks who took themselves to America were requesting their masters to keep in place? This is not about being stupid and proffering silly arguments that mean nothing to the unemployed youth in the country. This is about real bread and butter issues.

          • succuba

Wrong… there are NO sanctions on the country of Zimbabwe.

There are targeted sanctions against a few individuals that reside within Zimbabwe because of human rights issues

What part of that are you having trouble with TH!?

““On sanctions, I have to be clear, there are now very few sanctions on Zimbabwe. Sanctions are left on a few individuals. The only outstanding question here is of international financial assistance from organisations like International Monetary Fund and World Bank, but we have already begun discussions to have the embargo lifted.” – Robert Stewart.

          • TruthHurts!

When you sanction a country’s President like our new President, is that hostile act intended to act as an economic stimuli in the world you and other like-minded people populate?

          • succuba

You really have an uncanny knack of continually showing yourself up in front of everyone here John… For the record Mnangagwa is NOT on ANY sanctions… who keeps telling you these lies?

Accept facts and deal with it, stop bringing falsehoods to the table. It does nothing for your credibility here.

          • TruthHurts!

Succuba, you are now working in the US State Dept’s secretariat as admin officer responsible for liaising with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Zw sanctions, huh? You really are an important tool of the odiousTrump regime.

          • succuba

You can’t handle being wrong can you John…

    • succuba

I have knowledge. TH! it is YOU that agreed to debate and now runs for cover… come on let’s get it on here….. have you a big enough pair?

  • Piankhi

Africa is the reason the West and the East exit. Let’s keep it clear. The West survive off of fake printed paper attached to resources mainly from Africa. You can talk that bullshit. But the West off of nothing. It is the biggest debter nation on the planet with all other countries combined. They have the biggest trade deficit of any country on the planet. Their debt is balloning and this is the reason they keep Africa in poverty and policies of charity toward Africa, with vaccination to keep Africa sick so their Pharma companies can keep dumping poison medicines on the continent . Fuck America and the West. They are Finished $200 Trillion in debt and finished. The West opinion on African nations is merely and distraction for their for their falling apart.

    • gibson george

The extreme left have been saying this for years. Even the Asians have dumped socialism and communism, except for low IQ African leaders lol

    • gibson george

In the meantime tell the blacks to stay at home please. Don’t go to the West.

      • Piankhi

And you can take your white pasty ##### back to Europe. You snakes sit on this black continent and speak as if you own things. You are are the product of parasites that still infect Africa. You as a cracker have no opinion. Your opinion is based on white privilege which will be no more. Your not African, not indigenous just the offspring of dogs that came in infected Africa as to the rest of the world and left chaos, murder and in your path. And you think you have the right to speak on anything African. That’s like an Africa speaking on anything Europe. No one in indulge such #####. Your people’s time is over. You have enjoyed the misery of my people. Now you must got. There will be no story of one Zimbabwe or Africa is it is not black. Every other race has been and still are a plague to Africa. And now much be cleaned. Yes I am that racist, for my race. And if you white dogs that you can use your weak mental games to claim a place on the dark continent. You are about to get the surprise of your thieving existence. Time is over for you and your kind. Africa is for black Africans. And we will no longer apologize for what goes on in our land. The chaos exist because that is what was brought by Europeans, Arabs, Indian, Chinese. And it will stop.

Do you think calling me names will make the sanctions disappear? Sanctions are there against all your wishes.

    Reason Wafawarova is a blogger… I rest my case…

    • TruthHurts!

You can call Magaisa a blogger all you want but you cannot run away from the fact that he was an important advisor to the MDC leader during the GNU. So, blogger or not, your party at one time saw him as a man of substance, correct? If that was the case then what has changed now?
