Dr Oliver Mtukudzi put on a splendid performance here at a dinner dance hosted for African Union Ministers of Mines and Mineral Resources attending a week-long conference in the resort town. The dinner dance, which was held at Elephant Hills Hotel, left the AU ministers asking for more. Tuku, who was in high spirits played his popular songs, “Kukanga Mhodzi”, “Todii”, “Mutserendende”, “Watitsvata” and “Ndasakura Ndazunza” among others.

The gig climaxed after Dr Tuku churned the hits “Watitsvata”, “Mutserendende” and “Ndasakura Ndazunza” that saw AU Mines Ministers from South Africa Advocate Ngoako Ramatlhodi, Kenya Najib Balala, Ms Fatima Harang from the AU Commission and Zambian Minister Christopher Yazuma getting on the dance floor till the end of the show.

Some delegates from Mali, Ghana, Lesotho, Botswana, Ethiopia and other countries also joined on the dance floor. The show lasted for two hours from 9.00pm to 11.00pm and by the end of the show the ministers requested the superstar to play again at a cocktail party to be hosted by Zambia in Livingstone.
Dr Tuku was recently conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Ethnomusicology and Choreography degree by Great Zimbabwe University.

At 62, Dr Tuku celebrated his 62nd album titled “Mukombe Wemvura” comprising 10 tracks. “Mukombe Wemvura” means a calabash of water, and the ninth track on his latest release “Munhikwi” inspired the title of his latest album.

Tuku’s music is based on his personal experiences. He is able to produce sounds that people relate to, something that distinguishes his classic tunes from the rest.

His songs don’t carry explicit political messages, but he makes it easy to read between the lines. A prolific artiste, he has released more than 60 albums in Zimbabwe. Far more than a musician, Mtukudzi has been deeply involved in other art forms. He was featured in the film “Jiti”, the first film with an all-Zimbabwean cast and played a leading role in “Neria”, a feature film for which he also wrote and arranged the soundtrack.
