State witness turns hostile

Tendai Rupapa Senior Court Reporter
A State witness in the case in which the officer-in-charge at Mbare Police Station is accused of demanding $60 per week from commuter omnibus operators yesterday turned “hostile” in court and distanced himself from a police statement purportedly made by him in which he was nailing the chief inspector. Violet Sigauke (55) was arrested on February 9 following a trap during which she allegedly received $60 from a commuter omnibus operator.

Sigauke’s subordinate, Lot Muzamhindo, who is the State’s fourth witness, yesterday took to the witness stand and told the court that he was “forced” by 10 policemen to sign a statement that had already been pre- pared.

Prosecutor Ms Francesca Mukumbiri made an application to have Muzamhindo declared a hostile witness.

Ms Mukumbiri told the court that she had documentary evidence showing Muzamhindo had been interfered with to distance himself from his statement.
